Yes a repair will work sometimes, but I generally don’t do any repairs because they only come back to haunt you. A rule of thumb I use in my business is that if it needs a repair, it needs replacing! But I do want to share this story with you.
I’ve written a couple of times about this topic, and thought I would share my latest episode with a “DIY” – Do It Yourself – homeowner. I have nothing against doing things on your own. If you know what you are doing, then do it. If you don’t, don’t try and pretend you know what you are doing, because you will be creating more problems for yourself! Believe me, I’ve been down that path as well 😉
As you can see in the picture above, he had buried his downpipe and put a screen door mesh over the downpipe. The water had backed up and caused a lot of damage. And in the wintertime it would freeze up and create an ice build up around his driveway. Right away I could see that this was a problem . But he still tried to convince me that it was okay to leave it alone. I told him there is a product called Zip Hinge that he could put across his grass, and that this would not cause any freezing problems and backups.
To show him even more, I put the hose and in doing this I thought the show on the problem it way 3 pounds with a lot of dirt that was not working as you can see.
And as you can see in this gutter, they had put so much caulking in it, that the water was backing up and not flowing properly, thus creating more problems. What a freaking mess!!!
Install a Zip Hinge!
All of his problems would have been resolved if he had installed a Zip Hinge to his downpipe. This is a product the DIY’er can do on his own with professional looking results. All this to say: “If you can’t do it yourself, call the professionals!” Doesn’t matter what you need: carpentry work, plumbing, landscaping… If you are creating more problems for yourself by saving a few bucks and being short-sighted, than paying for professionals to do the job right the first time!
